The IT Fundamentals course was designed for students who are interested in information technology but have limited technical knowledge of computing systems. Students learn foundational concepts related to computer hardware and software, networking, databases, programming, information systems, and data security. The course includes a number of hands-on labs to reinforce the concepts students are learning. It also covers all objectives necessary to pass the CompTIA IT Fundamentals (FC0-U61) exam.

The course is divided into four main chapters.

CHAPTER

OVERVIEW
Introduction to Computers This chapter covers the history of computers in society from their invention up to the present day. Learning activities include looking inside a modern computer, identifying each of the components, and understanding how they work together. The chapter focuses on both hardware and software and the relationship between them. Students use simulated labs to install peripheral devices, manage files and folders, and configure settings in the Windows operating system.
Networking This chapter introduces students to the basic features of computer networks. After discussing the Internet, which is the largest network in the world, the chapter focuses on principles that apply to all networks, including home and corporate networks. Students practice using cloud storage, configuring web browsers, and configuring both wired and wireless network connections.
Databases and Programming This chapter provides an introduction to both databases and computer programming. Students learn about how computers use relational databases to keep track of information. They also learn how people can use programming languages to make computers do useful tasks. Students use Microsoft Access to create database tables and queries. They also perform simple programming activities with JavaScript and Python.
Information Systems and Security This chapter discusses how companies collect and use data to accomplish their overall missions. It then focuses on digital security threats and how to protect yourself against them. Students practice recognizing social engineering exploits, using anti-malware, configuring firewalls, and using backup software.
